Sun, Sept 14th
Roman Day! Immersed ourselves in two thousand year old
culture. Explored the Roman Forum, the Palatine Hill where the emperors
used to live, and the Colosseum. Those Romans knew how to build for the
ages. On the way home we passed through the Piazza Barberini, with its
1643 Fountain of the Triton by Bernini. By a bit of sneaky
guidebook-reading Alan knew this was a "spectacular masterpiece", although
we could quite easily have strolled by it, surrounded by marvels as we
were. This led to banter which persisted through the rest of the trip when
confronted with a choice of splendors: "So, is that the masterpiece?" "No,
that's just any old crap, the masterpiece is over there."
Visited the Spanish Steps by night.
